A former Australian prime minister has urged Oxford University not to remove Oriel College's controversial statue of colonialist Cecil Rhodes.

Tony Abbott, the Australian Prime Minister from 2013 to 2015, has spoken out about the possibility that Oxford University might remove the statue of colonialist Cecil Rhodes from Oriel College. Abbott, who is a Rhodes Scholar, said “The university and its students should prefer improving today’s orthodoxies to imposing them on our forebears”.
