The University Secretary is responsible for the effective running of governance across the University of Sheffield. Supporting a wide range of strategic initiatives and working closely with the Chair of Council, the Vice-Chancellor, senior colleagues and members of Council, the University Secretary will play a pivotal role in the relationship between Council, Senate and the University Executive Board (UEB). They will have oversight of the Data Protection and Legal Services team and acts as the Senior Information Risk Officer for the University. Reporting to the Vice-Chancellor and accountable to the Chair of Council, the University Secretary will act as a trusted advisor to both, and will build networks across Sheffield, contributing to strategic decision making and helping to drive our ‘One University’ ambition.
The successful candidate will have a proven track record of senior governance, advisory and/or legal services experience in Higher Education, or gained in a comparably complex organisation in a sector that aligns with higher education. They will have excellent judgement and communication skills, and with high emotional intelligence and strong analytical abilities, will be comfortable advising boards and stimulating and challenging thinking. They will have the networking and organisational skills to manage and advise on a wide range of higher education governance issues and will bring a strong awareness of issues relating to the Higher Education Sector in the UK and globally, or the ability to quickly learn this. A demonstrable commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion, and widening participation, and the mission and values of the institution will also be essential.
