The University of Portsmouth Students’ Union is a vibrant, forward thinking organisation with a vision of “delivering a positive impact with every Portsmouth student”. As a charity led by its values and guided by its students, the Union provides wide-ranging services and activities for the 20,000 + students of the University of Portsmouth. The Union is based in the centre of Portsmouth and turns over £1.7M per annum, employing approximately 35 career staff and a further 35 student staff. The organisation also works with over 1000 registered student volunteers and over 100 student groups.

The Post
As part of our strategic plan, the Student Union has set up the ‘Development Function’; a department thats purpose is to build an inclusive offer for student development and activity – to include academic, social, cultural and sporting opportunities – which will ensure students leave University with a set of skills to enhance their academic achievements. To ensure the continued expansion of this function, there is an exciting opportunity to join the team to support the Development Lead in driving forward the opportunities delivered and increasing the number of students engaged in activity.

The Student Development Coordinator will be expected to deliver on a wide range of training and skills development events, will work to identify opportunities for student development and build partnerships with both the University and local community; to collaborate on projects and to enhance the student experience. They will support the Student Development Lead to; identify national and local trends in student development needs, identify existing and build new partnerships with both the University and local community to provide development for our students, and ensure our existing development opportunities are reviewed, renewed and offering the skills that our students require.

The Development function team are experts in offering/sourcing skills, volunteering, training and practical experience to students that will help them to shape their future, both during their journey through University and after graduation, and will work with key University and community stakeholders to deliver these.

The Person
– We are looking to recruit a dynamic, creative and organised individual who is passionate about Student Development and who has experience of relationship building and project management.
– The successful post-holder will be confident in reaching out to new and existing stakeholders and building relationships that will enhance the student experience
– They will also be highly organised and able to work with both career and casual staff to deliver activity that students find engaging and impactful.
– The post-holder will have excellent communication skills and an understanding of the complex issues faced by students in a Higher Education setting. The post holder will also have the skills and ability to handle competing priorities and work in a fast paced environment.
