The opportunity

A British Art & Design School with a 150-year history, Cardiff School of Art & Design (CSAD) is housed in a state-of-the-art building on the Llandaff Campus and is home to students united by ambition and a true passion for creative enquiry. They are artists, designers, makers and thinkers in the fields of architecture, design, fashion, fine art, and a range of craft disciplines. The school is also home to FabLab, the Perceptual Experience Laboratory, Spin-out companies Fovotech and HUG™️, and a number of major research and innovation initiatives that cohere around visual perception and user-centred design, linking disciplines from fine art to computer science.

Principal duties and responsibilities

You will be required to make a significant contribution to the delivery of our taught portfolio contributing onto BA (Hons) Interior Design, BA (Hons) Interior Architecture, and MA Interior Design (particularly in the areas of design (studio-based modules ) and contextual studies), as well as other programmes within the Designed and Built Environments department, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The post holder will contribute to collaborative interdisciplinary projects in research, innovation and teaching. They will also contribute to a vibrant teaching and research culture by embedding their expertise into the curriculum, engaging with colleagues, and developing research outputs or impact relevant to their research.

Enthusiastic about student-centred pedagogy, you will contribute to education delivery, including programme management as required, across the range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. You will also make a significant contribution to employability, and professional engagement with relevant internal and external organisations, at a regional, national and international level.

You will be expected to contribute to the research profile of the department and to meet the qualitative and quantitative requirements for submission to the next Research Excellence Framework.

What we are looking for

A good level of knowledge relevant to the subject and professional area.

A sound understanding of pedagogy.

A sound understanding of research/innovation and scholarly activity.

Ability to develop teaching and/or research programmes and the provision of learning support.

Ability to design teaching and learning materials.

Ability to employ appropriate assessment methods,

Ability to identify areas for improvement and to use initiative and problem- solving skills to improve performance.

Ability to communicate and disseminate complex and conceptual ideas in a variety of ways – presentations at conferences, reports on findings, publications, feedback etc.

Experience of teaching or equivalent.

Experience of research or equivalent.

Experience of working with others in a supervisory/guiding/supporting/mentoring capacity.

A good honours degree in interior architecture, interior design, or a cognate discipline.

An earned doctoral level qualification or equivalent experience to enable submission to UK HE research assessment exercises.

Ability to achieve Fellow Status as part of the Higher Education Academy’s Professional Recognition scheme, within agreed timescales (as soon as is practicably possible and definitely within three years of commencement of employment).
