Goldsmiths, University of London is seeking to appoint a Chair of Council to succeed Estelle Morris (Baroness Morris of Yardley), whose term of office expires in Summer 2018. The Chair is responsible to the University’s stakeholders for the leadership of the Council and ultimately for its effectivenes, encompassing leadership and ceremonial duties at one of the country’s leading universities in the arts, humanities and social sciences. The Council is the College’s governing body, responsible for general oversight of its affairs.

The Chair will have attained a high standing in his/her professional field and, as a consequence, will have experience of chairing senior boards and leadership of substantial and complex organisations in either the private, public or third sectors. He/she will also have an extensive network of contacts that will facilitate access to senior people within government, industry and commerce, and the third sector. The Chair should have a demonstrable commitment to and empathy for the University’s objects and mission of accessible and excellent teaching and research in arts, humanities and social sciences. The Chair will be leading the Council at a time of continual change for the higher education sector, and is likely to need to steer the College through significant challenges. The Chair will need to act as a “critical friend”, supporting and, where appropriate, challenging other Council members and the Senior Management Team to ensure the Council functions as a unit and works closely with the Executive Management to achieve agreed objectives.
