Senior Communications and Engagement Officer

Expires

14th November 2016

We are seeking an experienced communications professional with first-class communications, project and people management skills to help achieve a step-change in the policy impact and reach of the University’s world-class research and expert knowledge.

You will play a crucial role in delivering an ambitious three-year engagement strategy for the successful policy@manchester initiative. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of an ambitious, award-winning, high-profile team.

As Senior Communications and Engagement Officer, you will lead on the delivery and monitoring of a number of key engagement initiatives, aimed at policymakers and influencers.

You will work with a team of Communication and Engagement Officers, and under the guidance of the co-Directors and the Head of Communications and Engagement, to support researchers and professional colleagues in the Schools and Faculties. You will build on existing activity and help colleagues to develop effective routes to impact among target policy audiences.

You will deploy a broad range of tools and use multiple channels to achieve demonstrable impact – with a strong focus on digital and online channels. As Editor of our successful Manchester Policy Blogs, you will not only have excellent writing and editing skills, but an awareness of what’s happening in the wider world, and the ability to manage a heavy flow of content to best effect.

Other responsibilities include proactive identification of external opportunities, communications planning, proactive horizon scanning for opportunities, delivering an effective programme of events, and managing policy@manchester’s online and social media presence.

You will have strong people and project management skills, with a commitment to building internal and external relationships. You will be required to take a lead role on team projects linked to fast-moving current affairs, and also high profile events, both in the UK and on some occasions overseas. You will be comfortable working on your own initiative, making important decisions and seeking counsel where necessary – and providing regular reports to senior colleagues.

Importantly, you will possess outstanding oral and written communication skills, and must be confident giving professional advice to senior people and subject specialists. You will ensure engagement activity among researchers is considered and embedded from the outset, and is not merely an end-of-project exercise.

The role sits within the Communications and Marketing Team in The Faculty of Humanities, but you will work with colleagues across the University.

Previous applicants need not apply. Interviews are scheduled to take place 30th November.

The University of Manchester values a diverse workforce and welcomes applications from all sections of the community.
