About Wonkhe

Founded in 2011, Wonkhe is the home for people who work in and around universities and anyone interested and engaged in higher education policy, people and politics. Our mission is to improve policymaking in higher education across the UK and lead the national conversation about universities in the UK.

We work with a wide range of organisations in and around higher education that share our goals and support our work. We build connections through our public and private events such as Wonkfest, supply critical intelligence and information services to the sector through our daily briefings and publish a diverse range of voices on We also have a growing number of subscribers to WonkheSUs, our service for students’ unions.

The role

Our Community Manager is a new role that we anticipate will quickly become a crucial part of the team, taking the lead with Wonkhe’s most important asset, its amazing community in UK higher education. We want everything Wonkhe does to be excellent; this role ensures that the people who are most important to Wonkhe get the very best experience from being part of our community.

The Community Manager will have significant autonomy in their day-to-day work and be expected to be community-facing, regularly meeting our stakeholders, readers, customers and subscribers, attending sector events, featuring on our podcast, presenting at Wonkhe events and more.

This a diverse and varied role, no two days will be the same.

Person specification

We are looking for someone who is passionate about higher education, understands the power of community building and looking for a varied and diverse role in a high performing team. Someone who is keen to develop and learn and thrives off delivering to the highest standard. A natural networker, you will be comfortable in an external-facing role as well as able to deliver projects inside the team to the highest standard.


  • Knowledge of and interest in UK higher education policy and politics.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong presentation, networking and people skills.
  • Strong personal work ethic, able to work autonomously and as part of a close-knit team.
  • Organised, with the ability to determine priorities and deliver to a high standard, to tight deadlines.
  • Developed IT skills, able to work with web applications, cloud-based file sharing and collaborative editing systems.
  • Customer and/or relationship management skills.
  • Creative in coming up with ideas, skilled at problem-solving, with an entrepreneurial approach to your work.


  • Experience of producing event content.
  • Experience of writing for publication.
  • A developed network of contacts and relationships within UK higher education.

Job description

Wonkhe community – Wonkhe’s community of readers, writers, subscribers and wonks of every stripe is the beating heart of our organisation. You will be the community’s champion in the team, ensuring everything we do is centred around their evolving needs and challenges – from going the extra mile in finding voices to diversify the debate, to delighting our partners by delivering amazing projects, to processing feedback and ensuring our products and services are continually shaped and improved around the needs of the community.

Wonkhe subscriptions – you will develop and implement a strategy to make sure Wonkhe’s briefing and information services continue to grow and beat expectations for our many organisational subscribers, across the whole subscriber journey including internal reporting and subscriber management in the team.

Stakeholder enquiries – you will respond to enquiries from all Wonkhe stakeholders, from event or subscription enquiries to article commissions, and work with the team to problem solve any issues that may arise.

Relationship management – you will work with other team members to provide an excellent experience for our many partners and supporters, taking a leading role in managing some relationships and contribute or lead on discrete partner projects e.g. written briefings, research projects, dinners and roundtable discussion events.

Contributing to Wonkfest and other Wonkhe events – Wonkhe has a programme of events throughout the year and you will need to work on these in several ways – from supporting their development to helping the delivery e.g. liaising with speakers and helping promotion. You will also be a central part of Team Wonkfest helping run and deliver our flagship event before, during and after the day itself.

Team Wonkhe – as a small team, everyone mucks in on our big projects such as our major events, cross-cutting projects, and product development and you will need to work across a number of these sorts of things and also work closely with the editorial team on the delivery and development of our many platforms including the podcast. You will also be welcome to contribute on occasion to our editorial output depending on your areas of knowledge and interest in higher education.
