Cultures and Pedagogies in Higher and Further Education

‘Perspectives on Education’ is a series of British Academy policy seminars for policymakers, practitioners and academics. They provide a forum for discussion about topical issues across the spectrum of education policy and practice in the UK.

Chair:

Sean Coughlan, BBC education correspondent

Speakers:

Professor Dame Marina Warner FBA

Nick Hillman, Director of HEPI and former special adviser to Rt Hon David Willetts MP

Dr Lynne Sedgmore CBE, Executive Director 157 Group of the 157 Group of FE Colleges

The lines between higher and further education are increasingly blurred, with ever more higher qualifications being offered at further education colleges, throwing up questions about the distinctiveness of the type of education on offer.

What are the differences in the cultures associated with higher and further education institutions?
How is the learning these institutions offer are valued by society, and what the purposes should be of the ‘education’ they each provide?
What is ‘special’ about each sector, are the boundaries that are drawn increasingly artificial, and what are the implications for the education sector as a whole?

12.00-13.00, followed by a sandwich lunch
