Daniel Hook is Chief Scientific Officer of Holtzbrinck. From 2015 to 2026 he was Chief Executive Officer of Digital Science, a wholly owned Holtzbrinck subsidiary, having been Director of Research Metrics since 2013. He previously co-founded and led Symplectic, a research information management company in which Digital Science invested in 2010, and was a founding chair of the Research on Research Institute (RoRI).
At Digital Science he incubated and scaled companies including Altmetric, Figshare and Dimensions. His work addresses the implications of artificial intelligence for research practice and the case for open research infrastructures as public goods. He publishes and speaks regularly in academic settings, holds a PhD in theoretical physics from Imperial College London and is a Visiting Professor at Washington University in St Louis.
