Communications and Engagement Manager

Expires

11th March 2018

Full-time (35 hours/week)

Fixed-term, initially for 2 years

The Henry Royce Institute is the UK’s home for Advanced Materials research, innovation and commercialisation.  With its hub at The University of Manchester, the Institute has spokes at six partner institutions: the Universities of Sheffield, Leeds, Liverpool, Cambridge, Oxford and Imperial College London, as well as at the UK Atomic Energy Authority and National Nuclear Laboratory.   The £235M Institute will allow the UK to grow its world-leading research and innovation base in Advanced Materials science, an area which is fundamental to all industrial sectors and the national economy.  It is also seen as a crucial element of the Government’s Northern Powerhouse initiative which aims to boost economic growth in the North of England and balance the UK economy.

This is an exciting and unusual opportunity to join our organisation and contribute to its establishment as a significant centre for the commercialisation of world-class scientific research. We’re looking for an experienced communications professional to work with the CEO to develop, manage and co-ordinate the communications agenda to promote the Royce as a national centre for Advance Materials Science.

You’ll take a strategic lead in delivering the Royce’s branding, communications and collaborative engagement activity with the aim of informing a wide audience about the Institute.  You’ll promote world-class research, nurture commercialisation opportunities in partnership with industry, and work closely with a wide range of stakeholders and partners to contribute to UK PLC and the Northern Powerhouse.

Working collaboratively with a small, dedicated senior team, you’ll deliver effective communications and marketing activity across a range of channels.  You will have practical knowledge and experience of media relations, public relations, strategic communications and marketing, and you’ll thrive working in an environment where you will need to balance conflicting and pressing demands.  The prospect of working with world-class academics and researchers inspires and motivates you, and you’ll also be able to demonstrate the initiative and creativity to be able to work independently, without close supervision.  Your influencing and relationship-building skills will have been key to your success to date, and you are excited by the prospect of promoting research, innovation and commercialisation.

Whilst we don’t expect in-depth knowledge of the products and materials we work with and develop, a genuine interest in, and enthusiasm for, what we do is essential.
