Iain Mansfield was formerly the principal official at the Department for Education responsible for the design of the Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework (TEF) and also worked extensively on a range of other topics in higher education, including the Higher Education and Research Act (2017), quality assurance, and student choice. He was part of the team that carried out the 2013 Triennial Review of the Research Councils and, in an early career role, served as Private Secretary to the Director General for Science and Innovation. Since August 2018 he has been a Governor at Bath Spa University.
He has also worked in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Department for International Development and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, where he held a variety of roles in international trade, competition and consumer policy. In 2014 he was the winner of the Institute for Economic Affairs’ £100,000 ‘Brexit’ prize, awarded for the best policy blueprint for the UK should it leave the EU – and he is the author of the fantasy novel Imperial Visions.
He is now special adviser to Universities and Science minister Jo Johnson.
