Technician Demonstrator – Electrical & Electronic Engineering

Supporting learning, teaching and research activities across the Faculty, you will be required to support a range of technology provision as well as the day to day running of laboratories and workshops – predominantly relating to electrical and electronic engineering and to support specialist IT hardware and software. Additionally, you will also provide demonstration in all electrical and electronic processes and techniques to both individuals and groups of students or users across the Faculty. Updating and developing the provision to reflect up to date industry standard engineering practice will be an important ongoing requirement of the role.

You must consistently apply a practical working knowledge and a high-level skill set associated with electrical and electronic engineering and will also support engineering research activities within the subject area – providing support for researchers and a research laboratory. It is also a requirement that the post holder engages with the University’s virtual learning environment to enhance student experience.

You will be responsible for the efficient and safe operation of all the engineering equipment in workshops and laboratories, providing guidance through documentation and inductions and through the supervision of students/users. Duties will include ordering, storing and safely disposing of specialist consumables and managing the schedule of maintenance/servicing of all equipment/machinery.

The running of workshops and masterclasses, demonstration of processes and participation in external events such as University Open Days are all aspects of this role and as such, some degree of flexibility in terms of working hours is required.

 

About you

You will have a sound knowledge and understanding of electronics and be able to apply this in highly practical settings. You will be able to work on your own initiative to meet milestones and deadlines. You will also have sound knowledge of how to set up computers and computer-controlled equipment and the management of software installation and software license management.

You will be able to work effectively to support both staff and students and will be able to undertake demonstrating duties supporting students in the workshop setting.

You will be able to demonstrate the ability to work safely, and to maintain a safe working environment for staff and students.

You will be a team player and be able to work flexibly and will contribute to the development and day to day operation of technology-based subject areas, including engaging with external stakeholders.

 

Qualifications

Essential:

HND/Degree (in relevant subject) and/or higher degree or industry experience.

Desirable:

Professional recognition as an HEA Associate Fellow and/or teaching qualification recognised by HESA, or a willingness to obtain within a reasonable timeframe.
