The Civic and Political Affairs team is a key part of the Communications and Advocacy Division within External Relations. We work with external representatives from local, national and international government, political parties, major businesses and many other types of organisation to help build and maintain strong relationships, to help the University understand and navigate external political priorities and to increase public awareness of the aims, impacts and activities of the University.

The Public Affairs Officer role underpins the work of the whole Civic and Political Affairs team, lending project-based support on an interesting and varied portfolio of work ranging from our flagship civic collaboration the Universities for Nottingham project through to proactive, high-profile campaigns, events and stakeholder communications, and will require you to collaborate with colleagues from across the University.

You will be a proactive and self-motivated individual who is able to build effective relationships. You will have substantial experience of working in a project-based environment, with excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong organisational capability. You will be responsible for liaising with colleagues across the university and work closely with a range of local and national external stakeholders.

You will be comfortable working independently and as part of a team, managing your own work whilst demonstrating flexibility to deliver the fast-paced and often reactive work of the team. You will have proven experience of prioritising changing workloads, meeting deadlines and setting and achieving milestones. You will have significant administrative experience to ensure the projects you support meet their deliverables.

You must have:

  • Ability to work independently and proactively, making sound decisions based on evidence
  • Good interpersonal skills which can positively impact outcomes with colleagues and stakeholders
  • Political and/or public affairs experience
  • Experience in producing targeted communications aimed at different audiences
  • Experience in working with senior stakeholders both within, and external to, the organisation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

This role is available on a permanent contract. Hours of work are full-time (36.25 hours); however, applications are also welcome from candidates wishing to work part-time (minimum 29 hours per week).
