Grade 7. Full time starting salary is normally in the range £30,395 to £39,609. With potential progression once in post to £42,036 a year.

 

Main Duties

The Public Affairs Manager will support the Head of Public Affairs and Stakeholder Relations with operationalising corporate public affairs strategies, duties will include:

  • Analysing areas of policy impacting the University corporately (e.g higher education, industrial strategy, Brexit, immigration policy etc) communicating their potential impact, and working with internal stakeholders to develop appropriate policy responses, with a particular focus on supporting the development of compelling messaging and stakeholder engagement.
  • Providing clear and concise policy briefings to senior management and other colleagues; this will include writing a weekly briefing for the senior University leadership on key political developments and undertaking on-the-day analyses and briefings at key political moments.
  • Supporting corporate ministerial, MP and party conference engagement and messaging.
  • Supporting the University’s engagement in regional affairs and enhancing our regional communications and stakeholder engagement.
  • Providing public affairs support and advice to corporate projects and strategic research areas to maximise engagement with key strategic stakeholders and influencers.
  • Supporting European and international public engagement projects in conjunction with International Relations and International Reputation teams.
  • Working alongside the Public Affairs Manager (Policy Impact), to provide support to the policy impact agenda, specifically to provide advice and guidance to academics in the College of Arts and Law on engagement with the policy making process as part of the REF (Research Excellence Framework) impact agenda.
  • Leading on the delivery of Birmingham Policy Labs and supporting Birmingham Policy Commissions.

 

Skills and Experience

  • Degree-level education or equivalent work experience
  • Demonstrable understanding and experience of public affairs or policy environment, including an in-depth understanding of the working of local and national government.
  • Experience of and sensitivity to the constraints of working in a confidential environment and dealing at first hand with senior management, VIPs and influential individuals, including understanding the appropriate protocol.
  • Demonstrable experience of building, developing and maintaining valuable networks with external organisations, and stakeholder mapping.
  • Experience of devising and delivering multi-channel communications plans for a range of stakeholder audiences.
  • Project and event management experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a ‘can-do’ attitude with an ability to bring people together to work towards a common goal.
  • Tenacious, with a creative and innovative approach to problem solving.
  • Demonstrable project and budget management skills, and an ability to work with initiative to find creative solutions, to work under pressure, and manage multiple workloads simultaneously.
  • The role will require some off-campus working, UK and potentially international travel, including occasions when it is necessary to work away from home and/or outside of standard office hours.
