Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research)

Expires

26th November 2018

The University of Sussex is one of the UK’s foremost higher education institutions. We are consistently ranked amongst the top 30 universities in the UK, with 75 per cent of research activity at the University considered as world leading or internationally excellent. Since its inception, the University has forged its own path and to this day it retains a culture that is wedded to creativity, universal values, international engagement and excellence in education and research. We have just launched a new strategic framework “Sussex 2025” which reimagines the pioneering spirit of the original purpose of the University, but does so for new times and a new generation. A key component of this framework focusses on “researching with impact”; challenging convention through an interdisciplinary, experimental approach, with a constant commitment to excellence.

It is in this exciting context that we are looking to appoint a Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research to join our executive team. The Pro Vice-Chancellor will lead on the development of Sussex’s research strategy and support the University with the final preparations for REF 2021. We are looking for someone who will promote a culture of success and champion a step change in the quality, volume and impact of our research, ensuring that all our research is found to be world-leading and internationally recognised. The Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research will provide expert academic leadership to the Heads of School, the Research and Enterprise division, and all staff and students engaged in research.

We are looking for an individual with an internationally excellent research reputation and publication record developed in a major university or research institute. The next Pro Vice-Chancellor must have significant senior leadership experience, ideally with experience of leading and managing change in a large organisation. Importantly, the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research must be someone who is not afraid to challenge convention, push interdisciplinary working, and foster partnerships across geographies and sectors. Sussex is committed to diversity and inclusion at all levels and in all forms. The University wishes to encourage applications that will continue to strengthen the diversity of its leadership.
