3rd March 2020

Founded in 1906, The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama is a globally renowned institution of the theatrical and performing arts.  An independent federal member of the University of London, we develop practitioners and researchers who are leaders in their fields and shape the future of theatre and performance. Our areas of specialism cover performance (acting, voice, movement), creative, design and production (theatre practice), and drama and applied theatre.

Central’s students consistently achieve and excel within the profession and lead innovation and creativity across the performing arts.  Students benefit from a large number of visiting industry professionals, dedicated technical support and first class facilities that includes the new North Block building, completed in January 2019. Our graduates are producing and starring in television, theatre, films and festivals around the world, and consistently demonstrate wider impact through enterprise and activity in the creative  industries and the community. Core to our identity is a genuine commitment to pedagogic excellence and innovation, as recognised in our Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) Gold status. In 2014, our research ranked top amongst UK drama conservatoires in the Research Excellence Framework. The diversity of our offer, and internationally-leading strength of our teaching and research places us uniquely amongst the landscape of the UK’s top theatre and performing arts institutions.

The Board of Governors is now seeking to appoint a successor to our current Principal and CEO, Professor Gavin Henderson CBE, who is due to retire in August 2020. Applications are sought from individuals with an outstanding track record of achievement in a relevant academic or industry environment, who can bring inspirational leadership, the strongest commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, and harness the wide-ranging creative strengths of Central to articulate a clear and compelling vision for this world-renowned 21st century conservatoire.
