Policy and Strategy Manager

Full-time, fixed term position (Maternity cover, 9 months in first instance)

 Location: University House

 Closing Date: 21st March 2018

 Interview Date: 5th April 2018

The Planning and Performance Department is seeking to recruit an interim Policy and Strategy Manager, to cover for an existing team member whilst on maternity leave. The role requires a strong understanding of the higher education policy environment, and the ability to translate that knowledge into advice and guidance for colleagues across the institution as part of the strategic planning process.

At an exciting time of ongoing change in the Higher Education sector, the region and the institution, this post will play a critical part in helping the University to position itself to optimise opportunities and minimise exposure to risks. In particular, we are seeking to complement the team’s existing skillset through the appointment of an individual who can bring experience and enthusiasm to the areas of strategic planning, risk management and external policy analysis.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a good understanding of the UK higher education sector, and the challenges and opportunities currently facing it;
  • Have experience of strategic planning, operational planning, risk management and project management, preferably within a university or other complex organisation;
  • Have good networking, negotiating and influencing skills and the tact and diplomacy necessary to work closely with senior leaders and external stakeholders;
  • Have the ability to assimilate and analyse new and complex information from a variety of sources quickly, distilling the key issues and utilising this to identify key strategic and operational issues for the University and to make recommendations for action;
  • Be highly organised and self-motivated, with strong communication skills.
