Executive Dean, Faculty of Science

Expires

15th April 2019

Durham is a very special university. As well as being a warm collegiate community, we are a comprehensive, research intensive, world top 100 university with an impressive research portfolio and excellent teaching standards. Our staff, students, colleges, departments, estate and traditions all combine to make this a wonderful place to study, work and live. This is an exciting time to join Durham as our University Strategy sets out a bold vision for the next decade that builds on our reputation for excellence and aims to ensure that we are world leading in education, the wider student experience and our research and engagement.

It is in this context that we are seeking to appoint three new Executive Deans for our Faculties who will be at the heart of leading and driving this ambitious strategy. As integral members of the University’s senior management Executive, the Executive Deans are key academic leaders, policy-formulators, opinion-shapers and ambassadors for our Faculties. As such, we are looking to appoint exceptional individuals who are not afraid to challenge convention, push boundaries, and foster partnerships across geographies and sectors.

The Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science will be responsible for the strategic development and financial performance of the Faculty. A dynamic community of over 300 staff and students and 4,000 undergraduates, the Faculty has a world leading reputation in its research expertise (particularly cosmology and chemistry) and is truly global in its approach.

It is essential that the Executive Dean not only possesses an excellent reputation in research and teaching, but also has proven leadership and management credentials. Additionally, the Executive Dean is expected to play an extensive ambassadorial role both for the Faculty, its constituent units and the University as a whole, so will need to be able to inspire those around them and build relationships both internally and externally.
