The University of Sussex is one of the UK’s foremost higher education institutions. We are consistently ranked amongst the top 30 universities in the UK.

With over 50 years of experience, SPRU is internationally recognised as a leading centre of research on science, technology and innovation policy. Founded in 1966 by Christopher Freeman, a pioneer of what is now known as innovation studies, SPRU was one of the first interdisciplinary research centres in the field of science and technology policy and management.

Sussex seeks a new Director of SPRU, to build on the excellent work of the previous incumbent in expanding SPRU’s research portfolio. The new director will arrive at a time of significant regulatory change in British higher education, and articulate a vision of how SPRU adapts and thrives in a new environment.

The Director of SPRU is Head of Department and provides intellectual and strategic leadership. The post is tenable for five years in the first instance, with the expectation of extension.  The successful candidate will also be offered a substantive open-ended professorial post in the Business School.

This position offers the opportunity for a leading, internationally recognised scholar in the area of science, technology and innovation policy and management, to build on significant achievements in SPRU, highlighted in its 50th anniversary year in 2016, to guide the unit towards a new era, within a dynamic, growing Business School.
