Our degree courses are validated by Middlesex University and we are expanding to meet demand as well as increasing the course portfolio. We are looking to recruit a Data Manager to provide one-year temporary cover from January 2020. The postholder will lead a small Data team and will take accountability for the development and delivery of all Higher Education statutory data returns; and to ensure the quality and integrity of both qualitative and quantitative data at the School is maintained to a high standard.

The postholder will work closely with other departments to identify and meet organisational data needs. The postholder will also maintain close contact with HESA and OfS to ensure Point Blank stays a step ahead in terms of sector developments and outputs from the Data Futures project.

Key responsibilities:

Statutory returns and regulatory reporting

  • Coordinate and produce all HESA statutory returns including but not limited to the AP student record, Graduate Outcomes, Unistats, AOR and Provider profile
  • Coordinate and produce all OfS statutory returns including but not limited to the Transparency return and HESES
  • Contribute to other regulatory submissions including but not limited to the Annual monitoring report, QAA and partnership reviews
  • Plan, develop and lead the development of the HESA Data Futures project
  • Monitor the progress of the school’s Access and Participation Plan using both internal and external data
  • Support the submission of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) metrics

Data management and reporting

  • Monitor Point Blank’s internal data life cycle to ensure the School obtains relevant, accurate and timely data for regulatory purpose and improving students’ experience
  • Ensure and maintain accurate and high-quality data by cleaning and validating student data within the student database and carry out bulk data imports or transformations accurately when necessary
  • Provide advice and training to team members and colleagues relating to the collection and management of data
  • Report on students’ demographic, engagement, retention, progression and attainment data at the committees to support Point Blank’s quality monitoring and improvement

Qualitative feedback and surveys

  • Manage, coordinate and analyse Point Blank’s internal surveys including termly module feedback and annual student survey
  • Manage, coordinate and analyse the annual National Student Survey (NSS)
  • Embed a student feedback framework to ensure student feedback is fed back to relevant departments for continuous improvement

Information governance

  • Implement GDPR principles in all activities and to ensure the maintenance of Point Blank’s ongoing compliance
  • Promote data protection awareness and best practice in information management, data governance and data security across the institution
  • Work with key colleagues and provide a link between regulation and practice to enable Point Blank to fulfil GDPR responsibilities
  • Review contractual agreements relating to GDPR
  • Chairing the GDPR committee

Business intelligence and data analytics

  • Ad hoc reporting and analysis to support strategic planning
  • Lead and coordinate the development of management information dashboards to monitor institutional KPIs
  • Enhance and promote Point Blank’s data capabilities by introducing self-service reporting using both internal and external data
  • Providing advice and training to staff on the interpretation and use of data to enforce informed decision making
  • Explore requirements needed for longer term strategic goals, streamline processes and make changes to internal systems where appropriate

External relationships

  • Represent Point Blank at partner institution and external events as required to maintain understanding of current and future data requirements and developments
  • External networking & partnership building concerning HE data
  • Keep up-to-date with latest news and development on HE data landscape
  • Identify opportunities to take part in with other influential external committees and institutions

Team management

  • Direct management of the data team including regular meetings and project oversight, proofing, guidance and approvals
  • Monitor and motivate team members to ensure the schools’ data quality and integrity are maintained and all internal and external deadlines are met
  • Training and development of team members

Person specification:

  • Professionally qualified with a relevant degree/postgraduate qualification, plus a previous leadership experience
  • In-depth knowledge of the UK Higher Education Sector
  • Current/ previous hands-on experience in HE regulatory data compliance
  • Knowledge of SQL and student Information management systems
  • Advanced skills of MS office suite, particularly in Excel
  • Experience of Database Administration
  • Highly numerate and analytical
  • Attention to details
  • Proven ability to handle data and information in a sensitive and professional way
  • Ability to problem-solve and possess the confidence to challenge pre-existing constructs where necessary
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills
  • Ability to motivate, drive and performance-manage both actual and virtual teams
  • Ability to be self-disciplined and highly organised in their approach to their duties
  • Ability to proritise responsibilities and adapt to change and work under pressure
