When the present English tuition fee regime was being planned, there were plenty of voices from inside universities warning that it would change the nature of the relationship between students and their universities for the worse. Students would, it was feared, become customers rather than partners in an academic enterprise – has this happened? Claire Callender and Paul Temple discuss their new research on the changing student experience.
Claire is professor of higher education policy at Birkbeck and professor of higher education studies at UCL Institute of Education. Her research and writing has focused on student finances and issues related to the topic. She has been commissioned to undertake research for some of the most significant committees of inquires into student funding in the UK since 1997 and works on numerous research projects for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and others in higher education.
