Competitive Salary plus benefits

The University of Manchester is highly respected across the globe as a centre of teaching excellence and innovative research. We are proud of our history of world firsts and brilliant discoveries, from splitting the atom to isolating graphene.

We are committed to world-class research, an outstanding learning and student experience, and social responsibility in everything we do. Aiming to become one of the world’s leading universities by 2020, we are seeking to appoint an exceptional Director of Faculty Operations to join our Faculty of Humanities. With a total income of approximately £200 million a year, around 18,000 students and over 1,000 academic staff, Humanities is equivalent to a medium-sized university in its own right.

The Director of Faculty Operations will provide the leadership and vision to support a world class environment and support infrastructure for research, teaching and learning within the Faculty. Reporting to the Registrar, Secretary and Chief Operating Officer, the Director will work closely with the Dean of Humanities and take overall responsibility for administrative services whilst providing sound business advice on key strategic decisions. He/she will lead a multi-disciplinary team of circa 600 staff via 9 direct reports across a full range of professional services. As a senior member of the University’s Professional Support Services Leadership Team, the Director will carefully balance the requirements of the Faculty alongside the need for consistency and collaboration with the wider University.

The Director will be an experienced strategic and operational leader with a track record of leading a range of professional services in a large and complex organisation. Experience of working in higher education is highly desirable, though strong candidates from other sectors will be considered if they can demonstrate an interest in, and knowledge of, the sector. He/she will have advanced knowledge of organisational operations with the ability and gravitas to lead a high-performing team of experts. The successful candidate will be well-versed in broader change management and will possess a strong commitment to providing outstanding service through an innovative and dynamic approach.
