Purpose and Main Duties

Since Dr George Birkbeck created the London Mechanics’ Institution in 1823 the organisation that is now Birkbeck, University of London, has been the gateway for ambitious people to study in the evening. In so doing they change their own lives – and make an immediate impact on business, the economy and our entire society.

As we approach our 200th anniversary in 2023, we plan to invest £150 million in widening our intake yet further and raising our standards yet higher. We anticipate that £50 million will come from philanthropists such as alumni, friends, corporate partners and charitable trusts and foundations as part of an ambitious fundraising campaign. This post is an opportunity to join a successful and expanding Development and Alumni department at a particularly exciting time for Birkbeck.

We are currently recruiting two Development Officers both will have experience of building thoughtful and considered relationships with individuals which have led to gifts of £1,000+. They will both manage a portfolio of relationships through which they will identify, build and develop relationships with alumni and friends to solicit them for philanthropic commitments of £1000+ to the College. One of the roles will have a smaller portfolio of relationships and split their focus between securing gifts and delivering our legacy programme which includes securing legacy commitments. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a step-change in our activity and our 200th anniversary campaign.

Interviews are scheduled for Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th September 2017.
