Chief Executive Officer and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Malaysia)

Expires

13th October 2017

The University of Southampton has an international reputation for excellence in research, enterprise and education. We are already known as a founding member of the UK’s prestigious Russell Group of leading research-intensive universities, and feature in the top one per cent of global universities*. Our partnerships and collaborations across the globe enable us to influence governments, businesses and individuals to make a real impact on society’s biggest challenges.

Our Malaysia campus, located in Educity Iskandar, is already well established as offering premier undergraduate degrees in engineering.  We enable students to obtain a unique ‘Southampton’ education in Malaysia with two years of study in Malaysia followed by two years of study in the UK.  At the next development phase of USMC, we have ambitious plans to introduce a wider discipline range and have initiated a transformational partnership approach, where the Malaysia campus will become our ‘ASEAN hub’ supported by strong ‘spokes’ in Malaysia and beyond.

On the return of the existing CEO to the University of Southampton, we are looking to appoint an outstanding leader who can take USMC through to the next stage in its transformation. This unique role represents a tremendous opportunity to join one of the world’s leading universities and build new, strong relationships across the Asia Pacific region on behalf of the University of Southampton.

Reporting to the Vice-President (International) and the Board of USMC, the successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day running of the campus. He/she will provide strategic leadership, while remaining close to the operation, and will ensure the campus delivers against its targets in alignment with the University’s international strategy. There is a substantial representational dimension to the role; the appointee will be the face of the University of Southampton locally and will play a key role in building and strengthening relationships with external stakeholders. The appointee will also be a member of the University’s International Executive Group.

The successful candidate will have a record of outstanding personal academic achievement and professorial title. A track-record of translating strategy into action and delivering against objectives, along with exposure to international higher education is essential. Superb networking, influencing and negotiation skills will be critical, as will substantial experience of budget and people management. Candidates must demonstrate resilience and determination as well as a natural respect for others and well-honed cultural sensitivity. Knowledge of wider Asia, SE Asia and Australasia would be an advantage.
