“Thousands of students yet unborn will pass along the corridors and learn in the lecture rooms and wrest the secrets from nature in the laboratories. Their work will link still more closely industry with science, add to the honour of the city and help to increase the well-being of our nation.”

Sir Jesse Boot, at the opening of the University’s Trent Building, 1928

The University of Nottingham is one of the world’s leading research-intensive universities. It is renowned for a pioneering approach to internationalisation, the quality and entrepreneurialism of its graduates and the scale and reach of its research.

Founded in Nottingham in the 19th Century, the University’s mission today is still guided by the ethos of civic duty and public good that shaped its origins. Today, perhaps more than any other higher education institution in the UK, it strives to be a university without borders – with 44,500 students studying across a unique global footprint that connects campuses in the UK, China and Malaysia. With Nobel prize-winning discoveries in fields such as MRI and macroeconomics, the University’s research has shaped the modern world.

The University recently announced an unprecedented investment in a new vision for the future of its research. This includes the establishment of six new Beacons of Excellence, which will bring together researchers from across disciplines to develop Nottingham solutions to global challenges. The Beacons are aligned both with world-class research strengths at the University as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Critical to the success of the University’s investment is for the impact of its research to have a truly global reach and generate wider public value. To deliver this agenda, the University of Nottingham Institute for Policy and Public Engagement is being established to drive a step-change in the University’s global policy and public engagement, providing a platform for the University’s researchers to engage more effectively with decision-makers, organisations and the wider public. The Institute will have a comprehensive remit to increase the reach, reputation and influence of the University’s research.

Working across all academic disciplines and the University’s global campuses in Asia, the Institute will strengthen networks and partnerships to amplify Nottingham’s ongoing contribution to tackling global challenges. Responsible for the translation and mobility of the University’s research amongst global influencers, policy-makers and a wide range of audiences, the Institute will also serve as an internal hub of expertise in global policy engagement and research impact.

The University seeks a dynamic leader and ambassador to deliver this vision and develop the Institute.

Reporting jointly to the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Knowledge Exchange) and the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, the post-holder will be responsible for establishing a high-performing unit which will earn the trust of senior colleagues across all three campuses.

They will possess exceptional advocacy and relationship building skills, with the ability to influence a wide range of stakeholders, and a track record of turning ambitious ideas into tangible, measurable reality.

The Director will have the gravitas and credibility to command the attention of academia, industry and government, with a profile commensurate with the responsibilities associated with such a visible and influential position.

The post will be based at heart of the University of Nottingham’s stunning University Park Campus, but with an expectation of frequent activity and time spent in Central London (90 minutes away by train). International travel is also an expectation of the role.
